Light Heavy takes Leopardstown title

2012-05-13 06:36:04

The three-year-old went into the race as a severe underdog, due the presence of Breeders’ Cup winner Wrote, and the favourite went off strongly, controlling the pace in the opening stages

However, it fell away and Tower Rock and Light Heavy emerged as the contenders. The pair were neck and neck for the majority of the final stretch before Jim Bolger’s horse edged in front to take it on the line.
The Irish trainer was delighted with the win and says the camp are now targeting a follow-up victory in the Irish Derby at the end of June.
“He managed to get there despite not liking the ground. He’s not the same horse on that ground,” he said.
“He’s a top horse with a will to win and lots of ability. He’s not going to Epsom. I’m hoping for decent ground at the Curragh for the Irish Derby.”
