Sibisi: Focused
The Team of Choice take on title-chasing Moroka Swallows in the last round of PSL fixtures this weekend, with the Dube Birds needing victory to ensure they remain within a chance of pipping league leaders Orlando Pirates to the trophy.
On the final day of last season Maritzburg managed to hold Ajax Cape Town to a 2-2 draw, ensuring the title would go to the Buccaneers, who pipped the Urban Warriors to the crown on goal difference.
Sibisi, though, says the team are focused solely on their own ambitions, and will not be concerning themselves with how the result of their encounter will impact the outcome of the title race.
“We understand that we have come to be known as the party spoilers after what happened in the last match of the previous season,” he told Football411.
“Just like last season, we are doing nobody favours but going there to try and win the game for ourselves. We are not in a good league position and it is always right when one ends their season on a high and cases will be the same tomorrow.”
The former Free State Stars, Mamelodi Sundowns and Ajax Cape Town hitman also believes the change of coaches at United midway through the season took a toll on the club’s ambitions, with the side having won six of their first seven league matches before a 7-0 drubbing by SuperSport United marked a tragic turn-around in form.
He added: “I think judging from the way we started, everybody from our side to the fans was actually convinced that we will finish inside the top-eight.
“I don’t know what went wrong but I’d like to believe that the changing of coaches affected the way the team was playing.”
United, currently 11th in the standings, will entertain Gordon Igesund’s Birds at the Harry Gwala Stadium on Saturday, with kick-off scheduled for 15:00.
