Kolkata eyeing top spot

2011-05-21 01:54:00

The Kolkata Knight Riders are determined to finish their league campaign on a high in order to put themselves in contention for a top two finish

Kolkata eyeing top spot Kallis - looking to finish strongly.

The men from Kolkata currently find themselves sitting in third spot on the IPL table, two points behind first placed Chennai and just one behind Bangalore in second. With Bangalore and Chennai facing each other on Sunday, a victory for Kolkata in their final game against the Mumbai Indians could see them sneak into the top two.

The new IPL system heavily favours the top two teams, and Gautam Gambhir’s men are well aware of this.

“By finishing in the top-two, you have a double chance of making it to the final,” star batsman Jacques Kallis explained to the Press Trust of India.

“The new system rewards the teams with the best record over the course of the league and makes it harder for those sneaking in third and fourth by making them play a straight knockout and then another match against the loser of the first qualifier.”
